Quality of Japanese Peach

It is individually wrapped in pieces and well-presented.
Larger size (size 18 / 18玉), 5 pieces in each box.

With its slight thicker skin representing the sweetness level, Japanese peaches are larger, sweeter and more fragrant than peaches from other countries due to its cultivation methods and weather conditions.

The Delicate Art of Growing and Harvesting Japanese Peaches

To understand why Japanese peaches are highly praised and can catch a hefty price, it is important to learn the process behind creating the fruit.
As they are a very delicate fruit,  each peach is treated with extensive care from bud to the final ripe product. Lots of  measures are in place to make sure that it is not harmed in the growing phase.
Being easily susceptible to even the slightest difference in climate, they are produced in controlled conditions to prevent any undesirable changes in their growth.
In possibly its most important stage when the peach starts to form shape along with its skin, a small bag is attached, covering the fruit to protect it from any external elements and disease.
Once ready, they are handpicked and inspected for any imperfections and discolouration before  being packaged.
Even this stage is carefully conducted where they are each secured in a foam cup, placed beside one another and not on top to prevent any sort of bruising during  transit.

As the Cherished Fruit of Japan

A culmination of the many years' farmers took in order to cultivate the perfect peach, this  may well be the pinnacle of peaches.
Sporting a pale white appearance with a hint of pink, it was originally developed by a fruit researcher in the Okayama Prefecture where it remains as a big producer of premier peaches.
The Japanese peach is often larger in size compared to  others and is brimming with sweet juice just waiting to stream after a bite.
In Japan the  peach season is between June - September which coincidentally coincides with the Japanese  custom ‘
ochugen’ where gifts are given out to your family and loved ones. It makes these  peaches an ideal and very popular present during this period.

The Historical Significance of Peaches in Japan

Believed to be introduced to Japan around 300BC – 300AD from China, the fruit did not culturally flourish.
It was nowhere near as sweet and succulent as it is today, however it still provided useful in things like medicine and religious traditions.
Due to its elegant appeal in appearance, it was even used as decorative pieces and showed up in various forms of literature.
Over the generations as peaches were developed to be sweeter and more edible, it quickly grew in popularity to the point where it started to be used as a luxurious form of a gift.
These days it still continues as an expensive gift, however they can also be found almost everywhere from department stores to regular supermarkets and is regularly consumed by the population.

An example of the peach within Japanese culture is the legendary folktale of ‘Momotaro’ (Peach boy).
Taking place in Okayama, it follows the tale of a boy named Momotaro that was born from a large peach which was found drifting down a river by an old couple.
Quickly growing strong he sets out on an adventure to defeat the demons that are troubling the island.
It is one of the most famous stories in Japan and with the Okayama Prefecture being one of the main suppliers of peaches in the country, it is evident at how culturally significant this fruit is.

⚠️ Peaches arrive hard and unripe ⚠️
Please Wait to Enjoy till Perfectly Ripe, Soft Peach

Our buyers select the best ones and when peaches arrive, they are often hard, in their unripe state, as peaches are usually harvested and shipped while still firm, as they can easily bruise and spoil when fully ripe and soft.

Allowing them to ripen for a certain period (追熟) will result in sweet, fully ripe, soft peaches.

In other words, knowing the correct ripening methods allows you to enjoy delicious peaches even more.

1. Storing peaches at room temperature ( in a cool, dark place)
Storing peaches at room temperature enhances their softness and sweetness.
Wrapping peaches in newspaper or similar material can protect them from drying out and getting damaged.

2. Softening around the stem

When stored at room temperature, peaches gradually become softer around the stem end (bottom). To determine their ripeness, gently touch the area around the stem with your fingers; when it feels slightly soft, it's ready to eat.

3. Chill in the refrigerator just before consumption

Apart from the touch test, you can also tell if the peach is ripe when the skin appears slightly translucent.
If you prefer to chill the peach in the refrigerator, it is best to do so about 2-3 hours before eating.
