Mikan / Japanese Mandarin

Direct from Ota Wholesale Market in Tokyo

By professional buyer, picking the quality that is most worth for the price this season.

Also called Japanese mandarin or officially known as ‘citrus unshu, these are a popular  seedless citrus fruit that you can find in Japan.
They are fairly round in shape and grow between 6 to 8 centimetres in diameter.
The skin is orangey-red, smooth and gravely in
texture.
Straightforward to eat as it is easy to peel, this is one of the reasons why the fruit is so widely enjoyed.
After uncovering the flesh and biting into it, you will find that it is firm and tender followed by a watery burst of juice that is sweet and tangy.
It is quite aromatic and can be smelt before getting too close.
Despite its smaller size compared to Western variants, the balance of sweet and sour along with a flavour that is more intense makes it  quite different.

Quality of Mikan

15 pieces of mikan total of approx 1.2kg per box.

The History of Mikan

Firstly documented sometime in the 14th century, its origins can be traced further back.
By the 18th century they were regularly cultivated in multiple areas throughout the country.
Just like most other fruits in Japan, they were seen more as a luxury item you would eat occasionally rather than daily; however, they are all a lot more common now after the post war economic boom.
Ehime Prefecture is one of the largest producers of mikan in the nation, where an area called Maana is specifically known for growing them.
Its geographical location of steep hillsides and the reflective sea, along with other factors like warmer climate create the ideal environment for mikan to flourish.
Due to all the light this area receives, it is believed that the mikan from this region are especially sweet and juicy.
Once upon a time these Maana Mikans were deemed so valuable that they were used as a form of local currency and was even given the highest agricultural award in Japan, the Emperor's Cup.

Mikan in Japanese culture

A tradition across Japan, mikan is regularly consumed in the winter.
Packed full of vitamin C which helps tackle the cold and flu that is prevalent during this season, it is a much more enjoyable alternative to any other medicine.
In December you will find various ceremonies at shrines that include the custom of roasting skewered mikan on a stick over a fire.
As the stick heats up it is able to steam the inside of the fruit, heightening its sweetness.
This is called ‘mikan-yaki’ and is thought to bring good health for the coming year as well as having anti-aging qualities.

Collaborating with professional buyers,
