Sugomori - Double-Layered White Chocolate from Nagano Prefecture
A luxurious double-layered white chocolate treat with a whipped cream-like richness.
Exhibiting a white chocolate exterior and an interior of yellow bean paste, it is comparable in appearance to an egg with its shell and yolk.
A charming and nostalgic product representing Nagano prefecture, it makes for an ideal gift that is both delicious but culturally relevant as well, especially from a long-established confectionary store like Itochu.
What Makes Itochu’s Sugomori Special?
Inspired by eggs in a nest, the double layered luxury white chocolate is rich and divine.
Ordinary white chocolate tastes like condensed milk, but Itochu’s premium version is more akin to whipped cream.
This is why many happy customers enjoy this Itochu’s Sugomori, despite not being a fan of white chocolate typically.
Inside, you will find a distinct yolk flavoured bean paste that is actually made using fresh egg yolks.
It is moist and fine in texture where the artisanal nature of the sweet comes to light.
Together, they create a perfect harmony where the subtle undertones of the yolk bean paste contrast the sweetness of the white chocolate.
Personal Blend of White Chocolate
They use specially adjusted high-quality white chocolate, so the taste is significantly different from the white chocolate commonly available in the market.
Furthermore, they select the type of white chocolate that melts smoothly in the mouth during the winter, and one that doesn't melt at room temperature during the summer, adjusting to the seasons.
Award-Winning Confectionary Represents Nagano
Recognised for its high quality as a wagashi (Japanese confectionary), this product has won the honorary Gold Award at the 20th National Confectionary Exposition and also being selected for the Shinshu Brand Award in 2013.
How to Enjoy
Story of Itochu
Tadayoshi Yokomae, the founder began a miscellaneous goods store called Itochu and was established in 1868, the first year of the Meiji period.
After the war in 1947, Hiroyuki Yokomae the fourth generation opened a confectionary shop in Iida City, Nagano.
At first, they were a small store that just bought and sold confectionary, but by 1955 Hiroyuki began creating and selling their own namagashi.
During this time, white chocolate was a rarity and not many people even knew of its existence, making it quite a prominent product.
As a statement of its popularity, when Sugomori was first being marketed and sold as a souvenir, it ended up selling out almost immediately where it was briefly coined the nickname ‘phantom candy’.
Throughout these decades it has continued to impress the tastebuds of many from across the world with ambitions to carry that on for as long as possible.
