The tart inspired by a Portuguese Tart, 370 years ago
Ichiroku Tart is a confectionery which exists and is still well-loved by locals (young to old) from Ehime prefecture, 370 years ago (during the early Edo period)!
In 1647 (early Edo period), a Portuguese torta (sponge cake with jam filling) was introduced to Sadayuki Matsudaira, a lord of Ehime Prefecture. He loved the western desert so much that he invented his own version with red beans instead of jam.
After the Meiji era, the technique was handed down to confectioners in Ehime prefecture and it became a famous confectionery around the area.
To this day, it is still a traditional sweet popular with fans all over Japan!
Locals still call this bite-size cake a “tart”, inspired by the word torta, which is the Portuguese word for cake.
Story of Ichiroku Honpo
It was founded in 1883 (16th year of Meiji period), and the "16" of the year of its establishment is the origin of the company name. It is one of the representative long-established companies in Matsuyama City, Ehime prefecture.
In addition to tarts, they manufacture and sell a wide range of Japanese and Western confectioneries, including local sweets such as soy sauce rice cakes and cakes.
Ichiroku Honpo has been improved in accordance with the changes of the times, but has maintained the tradition that should be preserved. Made with carefully selected ingredients and rolled one by one by artisans, the "Ichiroku Tart" is one of the most famous confections in Ehime prefecture and Shikoku.
